For us, it is more than just healthy teeth. We work to give people the confidence to show off their smiles and share that positivity with others.
Our story
The Big Grin is locally owned and proudly run by Dr Joseph Petelo, who trained at the University of Otago before returning home to raise his family and give back to the community he grew up in. He wanted to create a space that felt welcoming, supportive and full of heart, where people could smile with confidence and actually enjoy their dental experience. Today, The Big Grin operates out of our main HQ in Christchurch, with satellite clinics throughout the region, serving and supporting our local communities one smile at a time.

At The Big Grin, we believe in doing things properly, and that a great smile starts with genuine care. You’ll always be greeted with a smile, because we think visiting the dentist should always be a fun and positive experience.
Our team is highly skilled and NZ-trained, focusing on meeting each patient's unique needs. We use state-of-the-art technology and innovative techniques, and practical, long-term solutions that we know will make a real difference. Because we know not one size fits all and sometimes new doesn’t always mean better, we take the time to deliver the best results for your unique smile, while keeping the experience positive and fun.

Our practice
When you walk into The Big Grin, expect an open and inviting space with plenty of natural light.
Our main clinic is easy to find, right on the main road with plenty of parking. Accessibility matters to us, especially for parents and families. The building is set up with multi-disciplinary capabilities, meaning you can see your dentist, orthodontist or oral health specialist all in one place.
We’re open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, with an experienced specialist team on hand to help whenever you need us. Most treatments involve longer appointments and ongoing monitoring, so we get to know our patients well and support them every step of the way.
